Rialia recovers the artistic perspective on Bizkaia’s industrialization – The exhibition “Drawn panoramas of Bizkaia’s industry” will be on display at the Rialia Industrial Museum in Portugalete from April 1 to August 31.
Portugalete pays tribute to Bilbao-based illustrator Gerardo D’Abraira. This almost unknown artist captured the grandeur of the industrial network in the mid-20th century through impressive panoramic views.
The exhibition features a selection of drawings recovered from his collection of 120 works. They depict major factories such as Altos Hornos de Bizkaia, Euskalduna, Sesa, Izar, and Productos Vulcanizados.
Companies used D’Abraira’s meticulous and detailed work to showcase their power. His reputation quickly spread, and several factories across Spain also commissioned him.
In addition to the drawings, the exhibition includes the artist’s personal objects — cameras, writing tools, and photographs — to offer deeper insight into his creative process. The museum has also organized guided tours and educational activities for students.
Through ink and watercolor, Portugalete reclaims its industrial past and gives D’Abraira the recognition he deserves.
