In 1893, the Filipino artist Juan Luna y Novicio (1857–1899) settled in Portugalete at the invitation of the industrialist Víctor Chávarri (1854–1900). The four works painted there, now brought together at the Rialia Industria Museoa: ‘ «Obreros en el taller de convertidores de acero Robert de La Vizcaya»; «Era de panes en Horno Alto»; «Los ferrones» and «Mercado en Portugalete» – constitute an exceptional testimony to the industrial transformation and social change taking place in Bizkaia, reflected through their protagonists.
