Evaristo de Churruca y Brunet (1841-1917)
Born in Izun (Navarre), he obtained the title of Engineer of Roads, Canals, and Ports in 1866. On the 27th of November in 1877 he took up his possession as a Chief Port Engineer, appointed by the Work Board of the Port and Estuary of Bilbao.
Between 1878 and 1902 Evaristo Churruca run the works that transformed Biscay into one of the most important and prosperous regions of Atlantic Europe and the commercial and manufacturing centre of Europe. Providing the port with a 15m draught when in a low tide, a hundred years later docks are still being built thanks to the works he once run. The rates paid for its commerce, mining, industry and shipping companies provided the resources needed to carry this important works out.
The titanic effort required to fight the force of the water made this man of science use his ingenuity to make up for what nature had denied us. He was a clairvoyant, tenacious and wise, who put his professional life at the service of the economy of Biscay.
