Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton

Life emerged and evolved in the sea. The oxygen we breathe comes from the oceans. Phytoplankton produces more than 90% of the oxygen needed for life on Earth, is a set of microscopic organisms that live in the waters close to the surface and carry out photosynthesis.

The microorganisms that makeup phytoplankton absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and, through photosynthesis, transform it into organic matter and expel oxygen.

The green tones are due to diatoms, unicellular microalgae that annually capture millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Observe the dark green tones along the coast of Bizkaia due to the chlorophyll pigment used by phytoplankton for photosynthesis.
