In 1879 Francisco de las Rivas y Ubieta, Marquis of Mudela, bought the land of the Carmelites, from the confiscation and the \u00abCantabrian Iron Co Limited\u00bb to install the factory \u00abSan Francisco del Desierto\u00bb.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In 1882, the \u00abNuestra Se\u00f1ora del Carmen\u00bb factory was modernised. \u00abIbarra Hermanos y C\u00eda\u00bb became the \u00abSociedad Altos Hornos y F\u00e1bricas de hierro y acero de Bilbao\u00bb.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In 1882 the brothers V\u00edctor and Benigno Chavarri Salazar and several partners formed the \u00abSociedad Metal\u00fargica y Construcciones La Vizcaya\u00bb which put into operation its blast furnaces in 1885.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The \u00abLa Iberia\u00bb tin plate factory was created in 1887 when the company \u00abGoitia y C\u00eda\u00bb was transformed into a public limited company, which was installed in 1887 on the land of \u00abLa Vizcaya\u00bb.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

On April 29, 1902, the \u00abAltos Hornos y F\u00e1bricas de hierro y acero de Bilbao\u00bb, \u00abSociedad Metal\u00fargica y Construcciones La Vizcaya\u00bb and \u00abLa Iberia\u00bb were merged, and the resulting company was renamed \u00abAltos Hornos de Vizcaya\u00bb, with a payroll of 6,139 jobs at that time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00abAltos Hornos de Vizcaya\u00bb acquired the \u00abSan Francisco del Desierto\u00bb factory in 1924.<\/p>

The merger of the large steel companies gave rise to a powerful and competitive company: \u00abAltos Hornos de Vizcaya\u00bb, which has been one of the cornerstones of the economy and society of Biscay throughout the twentieth century.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\t
